CITY HALL – 90,000: Lessons from Madrid
Images from a recent trip to Madrid, showing the decision in the 90’s to reclaim space in front of the Royal Palace, by diverting a road in front of the Palace, underground. What can Cape Town learn? Is City Hall and the Grand Parade not important enough in our history to warrant such an investment?
Note: I cannot claim ownership of the idea to reconnect City Hall to the Grand Parade as this is part of the existing scheme by urban planners for the space in future phases. I am simply contributing to the debate, and hope to amplify the need for future phases, if not only because of the importance of this space in the History of South Africa. I have decided to label this project, 90,000, in recognition of the 90,000+ that listened to Nelson Mandela’s first public address at the Grand Parade in 1990.
