As Qatar ramps up infrastructure development to prepare for the World Cup in 2022, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has released a report highlighting the “darker side” of the construction boom here, and in the UAE.
The report, “Hidden faces of the Gulf miracle”, highlights the plight of migrant laborers, living and working in squalid conditions to raise shiny skyscrape in the desert.
ITUC says the aim of the report is to put pressure on FIFA, Qatar, and the rest of the region, to improve labor standards.
