SelgasCano's Louisiana Hamlet Pavilion to House a SelgasCano's Louisiana Hamlet Pavilion to House a School in Nairobi's Kibera Slum

The Hamlet Pavilion is a great example of architecture that explores non-traditional ways of making architecture. The pavilion makes use of light materials that are adaptable and further explores other ways of making architecture by shipping, what was initially designed as a public space for congregation, to Nairobi where it will be used as a school facility. The Kenyan students currently occupying a decrepit facility will now make use of this pavilion expanding the vision of how low-cost architecture can be effectively realized.

What role can public park play in connecting peopl What role can public park play in connecting people to housing service during the pandemic?

Having realized that many of the regular park users were experiencing homelessness, or struggling with precarious housing arrangements, Atlanta’s Woodruff Park decided to incorporate social service provision and housing strategies in their everyday management. Since September 2018, the park has connected over 100 people to permanent housing.

Who could have imagined the significance this innitiative would take on during a global pandemic? Now, the Woodruff Park offers a tested, place-based model that other parks can adopt to address the rising challenge of homelessness amid COVID-19’s public health and economic devastation.

Do you think this initiative could be inspiring for South African cities, where public parks are often fenced and vagrancy has long been viewed as “an issue”? Read more at the link in our bio

As the techology evolves and as more companies upscale their production, the unit prices of housing units will drop. There is also scope for the use of more sustainable housing materials and design so as to be more environmentally conscious.
