Bold ideas expected for the Foreshore

From 11-15 February, Future Cape Town will be partnering with the UCT school of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, exploring and sharing with Cape Town the possible and impossible re-imaginings of the Foreshore area in “Future Foreshore — Vertical Studio Re-imagining Cape Town’s Foreshore”.

The Vertical Studio Project is an annual workshop involving under- and post-graduate students from the UCT school of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, tackling a different focus area each year.

During what promises to be an intensive week of design fun and team building, the entire school will be on site through the day. Twenty-eight groups of students (including architecture, planning, urban design and landscape architecture students) across all years of study will be asked to delve into the character of the Foreshore through film and provide a poster imagining its future.

The outcome on Friday 15 February will be a set of short films and an exhibition which will be open to the public for viewing. Through this event and the collaborative efforts of Future Cape Town, the hope is to enliven the imagination of the city and display the wonderful opportunities the Foreshore presents, beyond simply debating the future of the freeways, through the work of some of its most talented citizens.

Says Rashiq Fataar, Future Cape Town Director: “The collaboration with the UCT Vertical Studio on the future of the Foreshore area is an exciting one, exposing close to 30 ideas which could reshape and regenerate a significant part of our city and port. The ideas of our future architects, planners and urban designers, who will play some part in re-shaping our city, is a landmark opportunity to unlock original ideas which could be fundamental to the transformation we know the Foreshore and Port need.”
