Media Release: Future Cape Town urges a firm stand and leadership against urban sprawl
On the 2nd of May 2013, Future Cape Town hosted its first Summit on the topic of Urban Sprawl in Cape Town. This mid-morning session took place at the at the Protea Breakwater Lodge Hotel, and hosted a small gathering of local government officials, urban developers and planners, as well as academics. The aim of the Summit, in light of recent developments in the city, was to create a forum to discuss the contentious issue of urban sprawl, and formulate a way to facilitate sustainable spatial urban growth in the City.
We are pleased to announce that we are publishing the discussion paper which guided the summit along with the summit proceedings, highlighting the main points discussed, to our website today: Summit Proceedings and Discussion Paper: Drawing the line on urban sprawl
We are grateful to the delegates for giving of their time and expertise, and hope that the conversation on this topic will continue.
Says Rashiq Fataar, Managing Director of Future Cape Town: “While the ink has just dried on the policies in Cape Town to deal with our development or urban edges as well as densification, the approval by Council to approve an extension of the urban edge (against clear policy) is alarming. The collective thinking of such an esteemed panel has been most valuable in constructively driving the debate forward in Cape Town, especially when the amendment of the urban edge will shape, influence and send Cape Town on a unsustainable development path in the future, defeating our ambitions to become a liveable, sustainable and compact city.”
Notes to editors:
Future Cape Town is a non-profit think tank advocating for progressive urbanism and the future of our cities.
The Future Cape Town Summit is a regular event with invited thought leaders tackling major economic and urban issues of the time.
The topic is introduced with an initial discussion paper — a fact-based text — which opens the conversation on the topic and is released to the panel a few days before the summit. The synopsis of the proceedings forms an addition to the initial discussion paper, and will then be released to the public and media.
