On 8 July 2014, the doors of Department of Design will open to Cape Town and South Africa for three weeks in the Provenance Auction House. Located in Gardens, the building will be transformed into a unique space to host workshops, lectures, discussions and events which promote collaboration and co-creation in the field of sustainability.
Envisioned and initiated by the Netherlands Consulate General in Cape Town, Future Cape Town was approached to play the role of the Local Organising Committee; to co-develop the main programme, manage the communications as well as operate the building and spaces.
Future Cape Town joins an experienced team which includes the famous Dutch design company Droog and Programme Director Christine de Baan, who was the director of the strategic DutchDFA program.
Says Rashiq Fataar, Director of Future Cape Town: “We think of Department of Design as a working laboratory for South African-Dutch collaboration to tackle Cape Town and South Africa’s pressing sustainability challenges.”
“Our organisation has been a platform for raising the discourse on major sustainability issues for close to four years and with Department of Design we are able to tackle them even further through a creative spotlight”, adds Fataar.
The programme which was recently launched is now online, while free venues and spaces within Department of Design are now open to bookings from the public and organisations who support the values of co-creating South Africa through collaboration.
A trade mission from the Netherlands will also take part in Department of Design. This will include a delegation of 40 companies with an interest in developing business relationships in South Africa. There will also be a number of representatives from local and international businesses, academia and government.
The programme is also supported by a local advisory committee which includes Design Indaba Founder Ravi Naidoo; Laurine Platzky, Western Cape Deputy Director-General of Provincial Strategic Management and Richard Perez, Programme Director for World Design Capital 2014.
