Many mayors are impressive figures and time appears to be on their side. Nation states (particularly the large ones) have an increasingly hard time and, in the context of a process of globalization, cities, and particularly small city-states, increasingly emerge victorious. Cities have first-hand experience with many of the things that occur in globalization’s wake, such as immigration and cultural and religious diversity, and are generally less dogmatic and more practical in dealing with them.
60 million people every year are heading into the cities and the UN estimates the trend is going to continue until 85% of the whole population end up living in the cities. With the vast migration to urban spaces, the challlenge is creating cities that are space efficient and intergrated.
As infrastructure and citizens become more technologically-enabled than ever before, this concept of urban flow becomes easier to measure. The immense amount of data generated in cities can offer us an improved understanding of how everything from water to waste to people to cargo moves around. All these collective actions of the city form part of the urban metabolism.

The world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in human history. For the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population is living in towns and cities and the number of urban residents is growing by nearly 60 million every year.
The secret is out – everywhere you look cities are mushrooming, and people go flocking. A flock of people migrating to cities quickly creates more than just crowds, it creates Overcrowds. These Overcrowds breath, eat, sleep, work, play and most of all move.
