Public space thinking…

When you think of public space inside a box, or a silo, outside of reality, you end up with nothing more than paving with informal traders accommodated as an afterthought. In South Africa public space thinking must be holistic, not exclude the realities of all forms of our economy both informal and formal, public or commercial or retail. Your pretty paving has weeds rupturing through it and stains from the activities of traders because you designed the space from the perspective of Google Earth images, not from the ground level of the end-user, the trader , the musician , the commuter, the tourist but most importantly the Capetonian.
