7 big ideas for Cape Town: Who will champion them?

The Cape Town Spatial Development Framework (CTSDF) is informed by 7 ‘Big Ideas’ guiding Cape Town’s growth and development:

1. Resilience and adaptiveness

Spatial organisation must be flexible to allow for adaption changes including rapid urbanisation, infrastructure and services backlogs as well as climate change.

2. A city within a region

Interrelationships with neighbouring towns require greater coordination in planning, budgeting, and growth and resource management

3. Natural assets

Cape Town’s abundance of natural resources should shape how and where the city develops.

4. The multidirectional accessibility grid

Spatial organisation must shift toward a grid-based movement system that is public transport-orientated and facilitates convenient access to opportunities and amenities. Activity routes and development routes are key elements here.

5. Areas of land use intensification

Mixed land use should be concentrated in accessible, high-opportunity locations along the accessibility grid.

6. Development edges and growth directions

Growth should be managed according to the urban and coastal edge that serves to contain sprawl, protect natural, heritage and urban areas. Growth directions will be identified to direct urban expansion in medium-to-long term.

7. Destination places

Significant points of attraction that form part of the city’s unique identity should be preserved, and new destinations developed (particularly in undeserved or neglected areas)
