In conjunction with our Rio+20 coverage, Future Cape Town looks at the progress of stadia under construction in Brazil in anticipation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Brasília 59% complete
The National Mane Garrincha Stadium in the nation’s capital will stage not only seven matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup (including a quarter-final and the third-place decider) but also the opening of the 2013 Confederations Cup.
With a projected capacity of 70,000, the Federal District Government reports that 59% of construction is complete, with delivery scheduled for December 2012. Those in charge of construction are also seeking the highest level of certification granted from the environmental NGO Green Building Council- echoing some of the environmental and sustainability concerns of the current Rio+20 Conference.
