In conjunction with our Rio+20 coverage, Future Cape Town looks at the progress of stadia under construction in Brazil in anticipation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Below we consider two key stadia in Salvador and São Paulo:
Salvador 62% complete
Scheduled for completion in December 2012, the Arena Fonte Nova Stadium is confirmed by FIFA as a host stadium for the Confederations Cup in 2013, as well as six FIFA World Cup Matches, including a quarter-final. Covered in a lightweight metal frame, the stadium will boast 2,100 VIP seats, a panoramic restaurant and a museum of football.
São Paulo 35% complete
The setting for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup, the Arena of Corinthians is set for completion by December 2013. The 65,000-capacity stadium will host six matches including a quater-final and a semi-final. Construction is expected at 60% completion by this year’s end and the stadium will feature 17,000 retractable seats required by FIFA for the opening which will be removed after the World Cup.
