When the French Tennis Federation (FFT) chose, on 13 February 2011, to renovate and extend the historic Roland Garros site at the Porte d’Auteuil in Paris, they made a clear move in favour of tradition. This decision was perhaps the most important one that had been taken since the stadium was built back in 1920! It nevertheless illustrates the importance not only of the prestige of the site and its unparalleled history, but also the future, in terms of innovation and quality and in particular the respect of the environment.

The French Tennis Federation (FFT) envisages a 5 year plan:
- 2013: Completion of new National Training Centre at the Georges Hébert stadium.
- 2014: Opening during the French Open, of the new Media centre and the new 5,000-seater court at the Auteuil Greenhouse Garden.
- 2015: Opening of the newly developed Fond des Princes area during the French Open, including a new 2,000-seater show court.
- 2016: Opening of the new Philippe Chatrier court with retractable roof during the French Open. Work on this court will be carried out over two years.
