A captivating four minute video of the redevelopment of Blackfriars Tube station in London, shows how the three-year project to overhaul one of the capital’s oldest unfolded.
The historic Blackfriars rail bridge is being given a 21st century makeover, creating the first ever station to span the River Thames. A new station entrance on the south bank of the Thames will be the first built in this part of London for 120 years. This is just one part of ambitious improvements planned for London’s railway.
Solar roof
Over 4,400 solar panels are being fitted to the roof of Blackfriars station, creating the biggest solar bridge in the world and forming the largest solar array in London. Generating electricity by harnessing the power of the sun will make the station more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run.
Better for passengers
The new Blackfriars station will feature a new entrance on the south bank of the River Thames, making attractions such as the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe more accessible. The new Blackfriars station will cater for longer trains and more frequent services, meaning more seats for commuters. Blackfriars Underground station, which has been rebuilt as part of the project, will reopen in February 2012.
