Relocation of Cenotaph to make way for MyCiTi station on Adderley Street given the Greenlight

Cape Town Cenotaph

On 13 March 2013, the Heritage Western Cape (HWC) Impact Assessment Review Committee made their final decisions with regards to the Cenotaph and its relocation. This is good news for the City of Cape Town as well as public transport users of Cape Town as the city will finally be able to start construction (once the Cenotaph has been dismantled) of the enclosed feeder bus station outside Cape Town Station. You can see a concept image of the MyCiTi station that will be built on Adderley Street’s Median and can see more photos with further details of the specific station here.

The committee, together with public feedback, decided that the appropriate place for the Cenotaph to be relocated is on the Heerengracht Median – just ‘down the road’ about 3oo meters. This will hopefully make the Cenotaph more accessible to pedestrians as well as tourists compared to its existing spot.
