“The future of cities is essential to the future of nature on earth.” With that thought in mind, ecologist Eric Sanderson set out to create a tool that would allow anyone to design a vision for New York City, set decades or even centuries in the future. And on the design platform, every ecological metric can be read on a dashboard: can you make a city that performs as well as a forest?
Eric Sanderson is a Senior Conservation Ecologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the creator of the interactive project Welikia.org about the natural history of New York City (including the landscape of Manhattan, originally called Mannahatta). In this talk he describes the ideas that led to his new project about the future of New York, Mannahatta2409.org, on which you will be able to create and share your future vision for the city.
