Public lectures at Department of Design

Department of Design is a three week-long event that supports sustainability and collaboration. It is the initiative of the Government of the Netherlands as part of their contribution to World Design Capital Cape Town 2014. Future Cape Town is excited to be part of the local organizing committee for this event.

PROFESSOR MARK SWILLING

Professor Mark Swilling is Division Head: Sustainable Development in the School of Public Leadership at the University of Stellenbosch and academic director of the Sustainability Institute. He is also project leader of Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Transdisciplinary Studies (known as the TsamaHub) which coordinates a transdisciplinary doctoral programme. Swilling has contributed extensively to public debate in the popular press on issues related to development, democratisation, governance, sustainability, energy, green economy and social movements and delivered many keynote addresses at South African and international events.

His most recent book is co-authored with Eve Annecke entitled Just Transitions: Explorations of Sustainability in an Unfair World published in 2012.

Dr. CLAIRE JANISCH + JAN-DIRK HOEKSTRA

At Department of Design, Dr. Claire Janisch and Jandirk Hoekstra will present a keynote lecture framing the discussion for the Healthy Rivers workshop to follow at 14:30. Hoekstra’s lecture entitled Room for rivers: The Dutch approach, will present a review of ways to deal with growing river discharge together with strengthening the condition for spatial quality. Janisch will present a keynote lecture entitled Nature as model, measure & mentor for healthy rivers,  outlining what biomimicry is and how biomimicry can and has been used to support healthy rivers, with a focus on a case study relating to the Berg River.

Dr. Claire Janisch is a Biomimicry Professional and sustainability & innovation advisor. She is a graduate of and has been a co-trainer for the international 2-year biomimicry Professionals Program (BPCP). She is the Founder and Director of BiomimicrySA and is the leading presenter, trainer and consultant for biomimicry in South Africa. Claire works in the areas of strategy, technology & education. She researches, translates and shares the genius of nature for product, process & systems innovations. Claire was selected in the Mail & Guardian’s 200 young South Africans in 2010 and 2011. She was a finalist in the Most Influential Women in Business & Government awards in 2012.

Jandirk Hoekstra is the co-director of H+N+S Landscape Architects and is on the Two Rivers Urban Park team of the Density Syndicate. He is also senior designer and  advisor for a wide range of projects in regional landscape design, city plans and events with a mix of culture and design. Recently he was the leader of the design studio for the Rhine-Meuse Delta in the southwestern part of the Netherlands and the leader of the studio for coastal quality that combined safety- research with possibilities to strengthen Dutch coastal quality. Jandirk Hoekstra is now supervisor for regional spatial quality issues in the Province of Noord-Holland.

RENNY RAMAKERS

Renny Ramakers is the co-founder and creative director of Amsterdam-based design company Droog. She initiates projects, curates exhibitions, and lectures worldwide. Educated as an art historian at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, Ramakers has since been more interested in making history by stretching the borders of design thinking. Her aim is to deliver cutting edge content and unexpected perspectives in an interdisciplinary and a down-to-earth way.

PROFESSOR EDGAR EDGAR PIETERSE + Dr. MICHELLE PROVOOST

Prof. Edgar Pieterse is the South African Research Chair in Urban Policy and the Director of the African Centre for Cities (ACC). The African Centre for Cities is an interdisciplinary research and teaching programme focused on quality scholarship regarding the dynamics of unsustainable urbanization processes in Africa, with an eye on identifying systemic responses. Pieterse previously served as Special Adviser to the Premier of the Western Cape Provincial Government in South Africa and directed a number of urban policy think tanks before his stint in government.

Dr. Michelle Provoost is an architectural historian specialised in historic preservation, urban planning history and theory, postwar architecture and contemporary urban development. Provoost co-founded the office of Crimsom Architectural Historians in 1994, since 2008 Provoost has served as Director of the International New Town Institute (INTI) in the Netherlands. Ever since, the INTI has grown into an internationally known center for education and research related to New Towns. Provoost also lectures at various universities throughout Europe and has been involved in many municipal, national and private committees and juries.

Together they will discuss the experience and progress of the Density Syndicate, a think-tank initiative by the ACC and INTI in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU).

EKIM TAN & JEROEN WARMERDAM

Ekim Tan and Jeroen Warmerdam will present on the power of serious gaming to make planning and design of cities and communities more inclusive and accessible.

Ekim Tan is an experienced researcher and designer in international urban design projects and founder of the Amsterdam and Istanbul-based city design and research network ‘Play the City.’ Born in Istanbul, Tan graduated as an architect from the Middle East Technical University (METU) with the Archiprix Award. Play the City focuses on strategic urban development in emerging countries, consisting of young and ambitious professionals from Cairo to Istanbul to Amsterdam.

Jeroen Warmerdam is the CEO at Tygron Serious Gaming. Tygron Serious Gaming is a serious game developer, specialized in bringing real-life complex management challenges that have multiple actors with unique tasks and different interests into a ‘multiplayer serious game’. Tygron streamlines the planning process and sharply reduces costs for urban projects.

MARCUS VLAAR

Marcus Vlaar is one of the founders and Chief Creative Officer at Ranj Serious Games. Ranj Serious Games is an award winning company specialized in the development of state-of-the-art game formats used for teaching & training, recruitment & assessment, and health & remedial. Vlaar has been a pioneer in the field of digital media since 1987, and has been active as visual artist, designer, script writer, game designer and game director for over 200 games.

ANTON CARTWRIGHT + KRISTIAN KOREMAN

At Department of Design, Kristian Koreman and Anton Cartwright will present keynote lectures to frame the discussion for the Preparing for Climate Change workshop. Cartwright will present on his research work on the impact of rising sea levels on Cape Town’s coastline. Koreman will speak on alternative and inclusive processes for city making and an integrated approach to jointly addressing a water, social and urban agenda.

Kristian Koreman co-founded ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles] in 2001 with Elma van Boxel. For their cross-disciplinary approach and their constant reflection on the division between private and public space, the duo received the prestigious Maaskant Prize for Young Architects in 2007. Koreman was also recently named as one of the winning teams for  Rebuild by Design, the competition founded as a response to Superstorm Sandy’s devastation in the region of New York.

Anton Cartwright is the green economy Mistra Urban Futures Researcher at the African Centre Cities. Previoulsy he convened the City of Cape Town’s climate change think tank. His work focuses on the application of economics to Africa’s urban transition, environmental degradation and poverty alleviation and the implication of these issues for the discipline of economics itself.

 INEKE HANS + INGA GUBEKA

Ineke Hans is the CEO of INEKEHANSARNHEM, the Dutch design studio that specialises in a wide range of 3D projects: furniture, and jewelry, small batch products and mass-produced items. Since 2005 the studio’s emphasis moved to industrial design, but the studio has a broad spectrum of professional qualities. Next to that, Ineke Hans also designs exhibitions and architectural projects. Having won numerous prestigious international design awards, Ineke Hans’ work has been purchased by leading collectors and museums. With a broad experience in the creative industry, Ineke Hans will be the Dutch keynote speaker in the Crafts Connection session alongside Inga Gubeka, a rising star in the South African design and decor industry.

Inga Gubeka is a 20-something entrepreneur who is making his mark on the South African design and décor scene. Born in the Eastern Cape and raise in Durban, Gubeka established Indalo Décor in Cape Town in December 2013. Although he studied interior design, he soon realised that he enjoys the physical process of making objects and now runs a studio in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. Here he designs and makes unique products including backpacks, clocks and lamps.Gubeka also creates wooden accessories for cellphones and tablets with friend and business partner, Gavin Ryder, under the Indalo+Ryder label.
