Voices of the City is a new, weekly feature that spotlights the everyday lives of our citizens, living and working in the city. By asking the same five questions to all our interviewees, we discover not only how our experiences of differ, but also what we share. It is a daunting task to try and capture the diverse experiences of our city’s inhabitants, but we feel that it is a worthy, and necessary, endeavor, in order to better understand the present and future of our city. This week we hear from Lunga Mateta, managing director of Creative Nestlings.

Question: What about Cape Town inspires you the most? It’s a beautiful place naturally, but the people that live here are almost not celebrated as being part of this place. So I see it as an empty canvas for the future – how people can so easily co-exist with nature and vice versa. That life process is so exciting for me!

QDo you have a secret space or place that you enjoy in the city?.

I like places that are easily accessible to all kinds of people, an equitable space that they can enjoy freely. So it has to be the beach!

Q: What was the last exciting event you attended in the city?

A very recent event I attended was a talk hosted by Creative Nestlings at AVA Gallery on the topic of ‘Resilience’ – what it means in today’s society and our future as humans.  How humans can function, survive and thrive in this current concrete man-made world, whilst preserving natural resources that were intended to be more than enough for humans to live and thrive on to begin with. It’s the the interesting topic that squashes all topics for me.

Q: What frustrates you about the city?

Information that benefits and enhances peoples lives is not spread freely to all the city’s residents. Only those that have the financial means to access that info, will get the benefit of it. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer here. It’s really a global issue.

QYou can have dinner with one person living or dead. Who is it and why?

God – the ultimate Creative/Creator – he could tell me the meaning of life, death and the universe.
