Athlone Power Station

Athlone Power Station was a coal-fired power station which stopped generating electricity in 2003 and saw the demolition of the cooling towers in 2010. In February 2016 it was announced that the call for tenders were expected to be made in the near future. The landmark site on the N2, midway between the city and the airport, is regarded as a key opportunity to alter the racially fragmented suburban landscape bequeathed by apartheid planning.
