District 6

Residents of the area were forcibly removed from the residential area under the Group Areas Act of 1950 leaving it a vacant space, with limited action to restore the area due to bureaucratic setbacks and complications for claimants. District Six is not legally declared a national heritage site by the South African Heritage Resources Agency, it remains vulnerable and unprotected.Today there still is 42 hectares available for restitution in an area that was initially 150 hectares.
