Foreshore Unfinished Freeways

In the 1970’s, the construction of the elelvated freeway began as part of a ring road concept for the CBD, was halted due to lack of funds and failure to considered wider urban planning and design issues. The proposal was focused on unsustainable, and now outdated, traffic engineering solutions alone. After 5 decades of indecision, on June 21, 2016 Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille announced that the City will invite bids from private developers to connect the freeways to the N1 and to develop affordable housing in the 6 surrounding hectares.
